Review: The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%

Assalamualaikum and hello my beautiful people!

Yayyyy I'm so excited to share the next product I have from The Ordinary! I mean, I have been sitting on this for like more than 2 months. So does it really work? Let's start!

PRODUCT INFO

Vitamin C is an effective antioxidant, brightens the skin tone and reduces signs of ageing. In its pure form, Vitamin C is unstable in water. Ascorbyl Glucoside is a water-soluble derivative of Vitamin C. It is much more stable in water but it is less potent than direct L-Ascorbic Acid. Being more compatible with water allows for a very pleasant serum texture. It is considered a gold standard of Vitamin C derivatives due to its high stability and comfortable use, but it's impossible to achieve extremely high L-Ascorbic Acid potency with this solution. Aside from the general benefits of pure Vitamin C, Ascorbyl Glucoside has been shown to offer specific skin brightening benefits.

Topical Vitamin C offers a wide array of benefits to the skin. However, many forms of Vitamin C and many more formulations of Vitamin C are available commercially with a potential to confuse the audience. We have developed a guide that offers guidance on the formulations of Vitamin C offered under The Ordinary range. It also offers education on Vitamin C itself and on the differences between formulations of Vitamin C at large. Please click here for this guide.

Note: Supplied in UV-protective packaging.

REVIEW

First of all, some people were wondering why I didn't try The Ordinary Vitamin C 23% Suspension + HA Spheres 2%. First of all, I read most reviews that they are stinging af. So I'm not going to risk my life. LOL. I mean, I'm that one person yang cannot stand stinging on the face, tempat lain takpe but not my face. Kalau kejap ke takpe jugak hahaha. Plus the texture is gritty and it oxidizes (on some people) so I'm not gonna take my chance. I mean, if I wanted to try vitamin C serum, I am only going to try the ones between 10%-20% only. Tapi Pah kan ada 20% strength jugak? Well, that one is because it is an oil-based serum so... I don't know. Maybe after I finish this bottle I guess.

Okay, panjang bebel. Imma call this mofo, AGS 12% sebab malas nak type panjang-panjang.

So basically this formula is one of the most gentle Vitamin C formula in The Ordinary, considering that it is water-based so it is less potent than direct L-Ascorbic Acid (according to the website). Now, I have read some reviews that this serum did nothing on their skin. Now let me share my experience.

Okay let's talk about the texture/consistency. Mostly The Ordinary serums are water-based gel and some have thicker consistency, like Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, it has almost like a snot consistency but not as sticky or stringy. LOL. It's just thicker okay? Jaisjdolakd. Now this AGS 12% has a very watery consistency, it is still a water-based gel serum but it is very lightweight, it is just soooo pleasant on the skin. When you apply it on the skin, it's gonna be sticky for a while and it absorbs quite fast, like after a minute or two, it disappears ya know and your skin will feel like heaven. That's what I love about The Ordinary serums. They're so well formulated, you don't feel super rimas even if you layer them. I think I have mentioned this before, the maximum amount of serums in 1 routine is only 3 serums. So I was using it with "Buffet" serum (yes the review is coming soon he he he) and OMG these two together, AHHHHH THE BEST.

After almost gone through half bottle of the AGS 12%, I finally repurchased my Alpha Arbutin 2%. (Please go read my full review on it if you haven't he he he). So I read few articles online and it kinda mentioned that if you use Alpha Arbutin with any Vitamin C serum, the effectiveness is much better. I do have some concerns that in The Ordinary website it mentioned that the Alpha Arbutin does not mix well with other presence yang pH dia tak berapa kena. So kalau campuq takut pH dia lain lepas tu dia jadi tak effective. I've been layering Alpha Arbutin 2% and AGS 12% and so far I don't have any issues. I mean, my scars still fading and my pigmentation aren't as bad, my face look brighter... So I don't know. Alpha Arbutin 2% and AGS 12% are both active ingredients and I know there a lot of tips out there on how to layer active ingredients, I don't actually follow them simple because I am lazy as f.

Oh and I read on Paula's Choice website, despite of the contraindications between Niacinamide and Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid), Ascorbyl Glucoside actually make the Niacinamide works better. More effective I guess? Because in Paula's Choice Resist 10% Niacinamide Booster tu kalau tengok ingredient dia, Ascorbyl Glucoside is the 4th ingredient in the product tau. Look, I don't know the chemical and stuff apa reaction dia bagai, I guess it works best with Niacinamide lah kot so I think I'm going to test it out and see how it combine together and I will update you guys kat sini or on my Instagram @makeupbypapot. Oh and of course you can see my skincare journey on my Instagram, hashtag #pahskincarejourney

**tested the combination, used it for 3 days now. So far so good. My skin wasn't super duper oily like usual. But I will update again after I have use it for more than 10 days maybe. Heeeee

Okay update. I dah cerita habis-habis on my Instagram here

As much as I love the consistency and the beautiful formula, I don't think 12% is enough for my skin. I mean yea, 12% is okay but I think I need more? LOL.

Pros:
Lightweight serum
Pleasant on the skin

Cons:
Not so potent
A bit sticky when you put it on yo face

Final thoughts: I really love this serum, the formula is beautiful... Ahhh I love it but... I'm not gonna repurchase it for now because I want to try other The Ordinary Vitamin C serums and of course I will compare them all. I actually have the Magnesium Ascrobyl Phosphate in my drawer so I think it's gonna be the next Vitamin C serum that I'm gonna try. I do recommend this serum if you guys hate stinging or tingling effect. It is quite mild and gentle and it's damn lovely.

*Since I have been mixing it together with Niacinamide, I might repurchase again. Just in case. Haaaaaaa

Rating: ★★★★☆

So yeah. I hope you guys find this helpful in any way.

Thank you for reading.

Stay gorgeous <3

  1. hai pah..nak tanya...currently I pakai Buffet, Alpha Arbutin dan Vit C suspension 23%. During days, I pakai Buffet and Alpha Arbutin shj. Malam2 I pakai ketiga2 (buffet first, followed by Alpha Arbutin and lastly Vit C 23%). Tak ada rasa tingling sensation at all. Berbeza kalau I pakai Buffet and then Vit C 23% shj (ada rasa tingling). I wonder kenapa bila pakai dgn Alpha arbutin tak ada tingling sensation. Does Vit C 23% can really be used together with Alpha Arbutin?
